Membership Statistics

NCGE's individual members tend to hail from states with large populations, but every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico is represented, according to a recent membership analysis. The analysis sketches a portrait of an organization balanced by gender and in professional activity. The analysis reported an almost equal distribution of NCGE members teaching in grades K-12 (26.57 percent) as in colleges and universities (23.44 percent). Men were slightly better represented than women; 51.89 percent of members are male, 48.11 percent female. Of 2,561 members, 81 live outside the United States. The remainder are distributed among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and U.S. military bases. New York has the highest percentage of NCGE members, with 8.43 percent of the total individual membership, or 216 members. In second place is Illinois, with 7.11 percent of the total, or 182 members.

In third and fourth place are California and Texas, with 6.87 percent (176 members) and 6.52 percent (167 members). Other states comprising over four percent of Council membership are Pennsylvania (5.86 percent, 150 members) and Florida (4.76 percent, 122 members).

With one representative, the Northern Marianas Island represents the smallest percentage of membership: .004. The study did not factor in the large number of institutional members in the Council. These are mostly libraries in the U.S. and overseas which subscribe to Council publications and represent 34.69 percent of the overall member total.
