Geography is about exploration and travel. The conference field trips have been designed with this in mind. During the days surrounding the conference, we offer you the opportunity to join one of our exciting, informative and enjoyable excursions.
All field trips begin and end at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. Please meet at the NCGE Information/check-in table located in the Pre-function Ballroom area no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of the field trip.
Join Arizona Geographic Alliance for a guided walk through the history of the original Tempe town site. Included in this tour will be descriptions of the development of the community within the broad patterns of state growth and development. Visit ASU’s Old Main and the Old St. Mary’s Church, and the Governor Moeur and Birchett House. Discover how these buildings have been repurposed for current use while keeping their historic nature intact. This tour is approximately 1.25 miles.
Join the Arizona Geographic Alliance on a delightful photo walking tour, “Tempe Tales,” where you’ll embark on a playful scavenger hunt to discover adorable rabbit statues hidden throughout Downtown Tempe. Each statue has its own unique story to tell, like Jayne, who found the perfect rock to rest under a canopy, or Judge, who loves watching the sunset over Mill Bridge. As you explore, you’ll also learn fascinating tidbits about Tempe’s rich history, iconic landmarks, and vibrant culture. Led by an AzGA representative, this whimsical tour is the perfect blending of art, nature, and local lore!
Join Explore Arizona’s Indigenous roots at the Huhugam Heritage Center and the Heard Museum. Learn about the cultures and traditions of Native American tribes, including the Akimel O’odham, Pee Posh, and their Huhugam ancestors. Visit a state-of-the-art cultural center on the Gila River Indian Community reservation, followed by a docent-led tour at the Heard Museum, known for its traditional and contemporary American Indian art collections. Participants can also explore the “Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories” exhibit.Guide: Jeannine Kuropatkin.
