The National Council for Geographic Education invites you to apply to participate in a new
project in support of Advanced Placement* Human Geography (APHG). With funding from the National
Geographic Society Education Foundation, the first of three summer workshops will be held in Eugene,
Oregon on July 14-17, 2005, followed by a 100% online teacher prep course offered in the fall term
by the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon.
Accommodations and meals for the 25 workshop participants will be covered by the grant. Participants
will also receive stipends for completing the workshop and course. The participants will be asked
to cover the course tuition ($55 per credit hour for the one credit workshop and three credit
online course) and the cost of traveling to Oregon. Travel support may be available from participants’
schools and some state Geographic Alliances will cover travel costs for participants from their
individual states. In return, each sponsored participant will conduct a workshop for his/her
Alliance in order to share information about the online course and its prospects for training more
teachers to offer APHG. Please contact your Alliance Coordinator or NCGE (ncge@ncge.org) to see
whether your Alliance is able to sponsor travel costs. If travel support is not available
from the participant's school or allianse, please contact the NCGE Central Office for other
sources of travel funding.
We have attached additional information about the summer workshop and the web-based APHG teacher prep
course and an application packet. Please complete all forms in the application packet and return by
June 1, 2005, to:
Dr. Susan Hardwick
Department of Geography

Please consider applying for this unique opportunity to become a well-trained APHG teacher! And do feel free to
contact the Oregon workshop coordinator and online course instructor,
