SUMMARY:The Sound of Place: Teaching Geography with Sound Maps
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nWhat can listening reveal about a place that a map or photograph might miss? In this interactive webinar\, Mark Sciuchetti connects his research on sound\, place\, and identity with practical classroom sound mapping. Participants will analyze a short soundscape\, distinguish observation from interpretation\, and explore how location\, time\, and context shape what we hear. Mark will model a lesson in which students document sounds\, map observations\, and support geographic claims with evidence. Designed for middle and high school geography\, AP Human Geography\, and local history classrooms\, the session includes paper-based and digital options\, accessible participation strategies\, and a simple assessment. Teachers will leave with a sound-mapping lesson framework and an observation sheet they can adapt to their own communities. Sciuchetti Jr.\, PhD\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management and Marketing at Jacksonville State University and a Courtesy Professor in the College of Music at Florida State University. His interdisciplinary work connects geography\, music\, history\, and place. His doctoral research examined Hudson River soundscapes and how sound shapes place and identity\, and he contributed to the Moravian Soundscapes digital project.
