The K-12 teachers discussed with National Parks Rangers current changes happening within the parks to “tell the true history” of the parks, engaged with Black American historians about the history of Washington DC and it’s direct connection to their histories, and collaborated with local geographers to ensure the 2024 Election Year would be an opportunity to engage “many stories” of Americans from every walk of life through a geographic lens. Teachers then created meaningful geographic-focused lessons and civic action projects to ensure every student, including linguistically diverse students and students from varied backgrounds, see themselves as part of the American story. Lessons will be explored and collaborative discussions will be facilitated to ensure teachers find connections and support for their own classrooms.

Session Focus

Early Childhood/Elementary | Geography | Civics | Elections

Conference Room

Xavier

Meet the Presenters

Karen Guerrero is an educator with 20 years of K-12 classroom experience, 16 years of teaching
future educators at local colleges and universities, and 20 years of conducting teacher
professional development.
