This session is designed to engage and challenge participants by exposing them to out-of-the-box teaching strategies for teaching both physical and human geography.<\/p>\n<p>During this session, participants will learn how to use everyday materials to engage students and learn geography through a new lens by using artifacts. Through experiential activities, participants will learn how to engage not only the mind but also the senses while learning how food and geography go hand in hand. Prior to his time with KSDE, Nathan taught middle and high school social studies for 24 years. In the classroom, his students created and led several civic and historical preservation projects. These include three pieces of Kansas Legislation, an African American Civil War mural, and multiple National History Day and Lowell Milken for Unsung Heroes projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2010, Nathan was named Kansas and National History Teacher of the Year by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nathan has also been named a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Master Teacher Fellow, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Fellow, and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Washington Library<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Lifeguard Teacher Fellow.
