Build Stronger Geographic Literacy Through Community

A Message from the Executive Director
I am incredibly proud to be serving as the Executive Director of the organization that takes the lead on supporting and advocating for high quality geography education at all levels of the US educational system. It is an honor to work alongside and on behalf of professional geographers and educators who share a commitment to helping students become geographically informed contributors to their communities, the workforce, causes that they care about, their cultures and countries, and the world. I am convinced that a quality geography education should be understood not just as part of a well-rounded education, but as critical life skills for students who will contribute to a world with both great opportunities and great challenges for them. In a world in which socioeconomic interdependence, environmental vulnerability, geopolitical realignments, and an increasing pace of technological change are all basic facts of life, geography is crucial to seeing things both as they are and as they could be.
I encourage you to become an active participant in the NCGE community. We are here to provide our members with opportunities to expand and share their knowledge, connect and engage with a network of professionals that is national in scope and globally connected, and raise their voices about the value of geography education for all students and for our greater society. Join; attend webinars, GeoCircles, and our annual conference; read and submit your own writing to our journals; come along on NCGE Around the World trips; donate to the Fund for Geography and the Future.
I look forward to having your assets included in the NCGE community and encourage you to reach out to me directly if you have questions or ideas.
SIncerely,
Tom Herman
