Join us for an informal, organic discussion facilitated by APHG educators for APHG educators. Each session will focus on a participant-driven conversation about each unit where you can share your insights, seek advice, and discuss the latest trends that support the implementation of the AP Human Geography curriculum without the constraints of a formal presentation.
Discover engaging ways to teach Unit 3 Cultural Geography. In this roundtable, educators will explore how culture shapes identities and landscapes while examining the influence of environment, resources, language, religion, and social practices. Bring your questions and share your strategies for analyzing images and cultural landscapes, helping students recognize patterns across time and place. Let’s talk about the best way to investigate how cultural traits spread through historical forces such as colonialism and modern influences like social media. This unit will help your students build their abilities for Skill 3 and Skill 4.
About the Facilitator
Ken Carano is a professor of social studies education at Western Oregon University and programs coordinator for the Center for Geography Education in Oregon. A former high school social studies teacher and Peace Corps Volunteer in Suriname, his scholarship focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion in local and global contexts.
Rik Katz, a retired geography and PNW history teacher of 30 plus years including 20 teaching APHG/ Award winning teacher from NCGE, workshop leader, author and published photographer. Now retired wandering the world with my camera and geographic lens on.
Corey Merrell has taught AP Human Geography since 2007. He has participated in the AP reading since 2009. Corey has taught on the North Slope of Alaska, southern Utah and is now in Springfield, Oregon.
