GeoCamp Iceland

OVERVIEW: NCGE invites educators of all levels to take part in  and GeoCamp Iceland, a one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity abroad.  Mark you calendars: Iceland June 28 – July 7, 2024 (including travel days).

GeoCamp Iceland is a place-based course in geography for in-service teachers and education professionals. Iceland’s volcanic and glacial landscapes will serve as our classroom. We will explore the topics of geomorphology; natural hazards; human settlement; geopolitics; economic development; climate change; and sense of place.

WHO CAN ATTEND: Up to twenty-five (25) U.S. K-12 educators or higher education faculty who teach any of the social studies, earth or environmental sciences, or any subject where the applicant can make an explicit connection to geography within their  curriculum. 

DELIVERABLES:Participants will be expected to produce a classroom-ready resource (e.g., photo essay, lesson plan, StoryMap, content article, etc.) for dissemination through national, state and/or local outlets including the NCGE Annual Conference and/or The Geography Teacher journal. Participants are strongly encouraged to coordinate dissemination activities with local and regional educational organizations, as well as NCGE’s Partner Network. Materials created by GeoCamp Iceland participants will be archived in the NCGE Resource Library for use by teachers and students all over the world. NCGE will provide a participation certificate that individuals may use to apply toward obtaining professional development credits consistent with policies in their respective school districts. For individuals wishing to collaborate on the 2024 resource, a participant list with grade level and area of focus will be provided once the 2024 trip cohort has been finalized. 

COST: $3,500. The program fee includes lodging, meals, tour fees, ground transportation, course materials, and honoraria for expert guides and presentations. The program cost does not include airfare or personal expenses. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable $1000 deposit is due within 7 days, with the balance due on or before March 31, 2024.  

PLEASE NOTE: NCGE reserves the right to cancel GeoCamp Iceland for any reason.  In the event of cancelation, NCGE will provide a full refund for any payment to NCGE.

Application Process: Once an application is received, it will be reviewed within 2-3 business days. You will then receive notification of your acceptance status and next steps, if applicable, via email.

Please note: If accepted into the program a non-refundable deposit of $1000 will be due within 7 days from the original date of the acceptance email.  If you are receiving a grant and/or a scholarship from an outside source, you will be asked to provide this information on your application.
